CHAPTER TEN

With a Little Help From My Friends

Devin laid her hand over her mother’s to stop the incessant drumming of her fingers as Ciara read over the notes they had put together for their business idea.

Her mother’s knowledge of creating a business turned out to be invaluable, and with just a half a day’s work, they’d put together a thirty-page, extensive plan on how to get started.

And thank fuck for all of it because she’d been staring at her phone just waiting for TJ, and all she had to show for it was silence. A day and a half and nothing. Calling him reeked of desperation, and she was absolutely not desperate. She’d laid down the terms; he just had to man up and follow them.

The jerk was missing out. She’d gotten all prettied up at the salon, her bleached strands nothing but a distant memory. She forgot how dark her hair was and the way that contrast made her eyes stand out. She’d even pulled out her curvy girl jeans, her V-neck wrap sweaters, and some rather impressive leather boots that ended just above her knees, knowing damn well the combo would bring him to his.

Right where she wanted him.

After spending a good month hiding under hats and behind sunglasses, she’d spent the past twelve hours stopping at every mirror to enjoy the bounce of her shiny locks. She wanted them bouncing for TJ, dammit.

But maybe he’d chickened out on talking to Rory.

The butthead.

So, she’d stewed, and in true mother fashion, her mom swooped in and put that energy to good use. In just minutes, her mother dazzled her with a wealth of business savvy that she never knew the woman had.

Her mother knew the ins and outs of creating names, trademarks, business accounts, and then she shocked the hell out of her by diving right into a social media presence.

“How do you know about verified accounts?” Devin asked, sputtering out a laugh.

“Nora Lynn started her own preserves business, and that sucker took right off. Next thing you know, she’s branding her feed and getting verified. I figured if she was going to take up so much time going on and on about herself, I might as well learn something from it. Next thing you know, I was Googling presets on Etsy to use as filters on Instagram and fell down one hell of a rabbit hole. Good thing I did too, all things considered.”

In that moment, she vowed to never take her mother for granted again. The woman was an absolute powerhouse.

Through the initial hours of planning, her mother had never once pushed. They bounced ideas off one another until pieces fell into place and a rough business plan came together.

The next step…getting in touch with every connection she had in the modeling industry, no matter how big or small.

She decided to hit hard and fast by reaching out to one of the best in the entire industry after having made a huge success from the exposure Sports Illustrated gave in their swimsuit edition ten years earlier.
